With Journal Sync, you can back up your journals to iCloud and sync your content between your iOS devices. Journal Sync is a Paper Pro feature.
Synced - Your journal will be synced with your iCloud account
Local-Only - Your journal will be available only on that device
Cloud-Only - Your journal is on iCloud and not available on your device
Sync all
Tap on the Settings icon top right, then "Journal Sync", and toggle on Journal Sync.
You'll see a small circling icon top right. If you tap on this, the Sync information window will pop up. The information in this window will give you an idea of what's going on.
Sync runs in the background and if you have a lot of content, it may take some time for your first sync to complete.
Sync vs. Selective Syncing
You can choose between syncing all the Journals on your device or selective syncing.
To change the sync status of an individual Journal tap on the Settings icon in Home View. From there, tap on "Journal Sync" and then "Selective Syncing". On the next screen, you'll see a list of your Journals. Tap on each Journal to select from "Synced", "Local-Only", or "Cloud-Only".
NB: It's important to note that Local-only are not synced or backed up. If you delete a Local-Only Journal or content from a Local-Only Journal, the content will be permanently deleted. If you deleted Paper from your iPhone or iPad, your Local-Only Journals will also be permanently deleted.
Deleting and recovering Synced Content
Paper Pro subscribers who are syncing their Journals can recover deleted files or Journals via your device's Files app. In the Files app (not Paper), navigate to the Recently Deleted area under "Locations". You should see all of your deleted pages or journal folders there. Tap on "Select", select the Paper content you want to recover, and then "Recover".
If your Journals are local to your device and you've been backing up your device regularly, you could restore your entire iPad or iPhone to a point before the content was deleted. Please note that you would lose any content in Paper that you had created after that restore point.
NB: Recovering content in Paper Pro isn't retroactive. Purchasing Paper Pro now wouldn't help you with content that has already been deleted.
iCloud account
Journal sync is tied to your Apple ID, not your Paper app. Your storage limits are managed via Apple.
If you log out of your iCloud account in you're devices' iOS Settings, Paper will not be able to display your synced journals.
Why do I have so many duplicate journals?
If you performed restore from backup on multiple devices, each of those journals is treated as unique.
I need syncing on the desktop!
Paper's files currently sync to the iCloud Drive folder in macOS, but there is not currently a Mac app which can open them.
Troubleshooting Sync
Restarting Paper resolves the majority of issues that a few of our users experience with seemingly missing Journals or Journal content. Here's the information from Apple on how to restart an app on your iPad or iPhone. If restarting Paper doesn't work, you can try restarting your iPad or iPhone.
Please know that Sync isn't immediate and it may take some time, even minutes, for your content to appear.
